US Tax Guide

The HSA triple tax advantage explained

The Health Savings Account is the only account in the US tax code that gives you three tax breaks at once. No other account in any of the three countries we cover matches it. 2026 limit: $4,400 self-only, $8,750 family.

The three breaks

Tax breakWhat it means401(k) comparison
1. Pre-tax contributionsReduces federal + state income taxSame as 401(k)
2. Avoids FICA (payroll deduction)Saves 7.65% (6.2% SS + 1.45% Medicare)401(k) does NOT avoid FICA
3. Tax-free withdrawals for medicalQualified medical expenses, any age, no tax401(k) withdrawals are taxed

At $80,000 income, a full $4,400 HSA contribution through payroll saves $1,306 (22% IT + 7.65% FICA = 29.65%). The same amount in a 401(k) saves only $968 (22% IT only). The HSA saves $338 more per year on the same dollars. At $150,000 (32% bracket), the gap widens: HSA saves $1,745 vs 401(k) $1,408.

The stealth retirement account

After age 65, an HSA works exactly like a Traditional IRA for non-medical withdrawals (taxed as income, no penalty). For medical withdrawals, it remains tax-free at any age. There is no required minimum distribution. This makes it a hybrid retirement + medical account.

The optimal strategy: pay medical expenses out of pocket, save every receipt, invest the HSA balance in a broad index fund, and reimburse yourself years later for a tax-free withdrawal. There is no deadline to reimburse. See the full strategy in the HSA advantage guide.

Eligibility

You must be enrolled in a qualifying High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) and have no other general-purpose health coverage (FSA, non-HDHP secondary, Medicare). Check your insurance card or benefits portal. Fund through payroll to capture the FICA saving; self-funded HSAs are deductible but still owe FICA. Use the calculator to see your exact saving.
